Dialogues with the host and the waiter.

Host- anfitrião,
Hostess – anfitriã
Waiter – garçom
Waitress – garçonete

Dialogue at the entrance

The host will ask you about the number of people who are with you in order to reserve a table. Here there are some options:

  How many (are in your party)?
  Party of how many?
  Table for 2, 3, 4?
  Party of 2, 3?

If the restaurant is crowded and they want to know if you have a reservation, you will hear:

    We're busy tonight. Do you have a reservation?

But if there is only one queue, for example to set the table, you will hear:

    It's gonna be about 15 to 20 minutes.

He will also ask for your name so he can make the reservation and notify you as soon as the table is ready:

  Can I get your name?

When your table is ready:

    Mr John. Your table is ready.

He will ask you to follow him, he will show you which one it is and he will wait for you to get comfortable.

    Right this way. / Follow me, please.
    This is your table.

Menu vocabulary and condiments

The second best part of going to a restaurant is definitely choosing what you're going to eat. I brought some important things:

  Appetizers/starters – entrada e aperitivos
       Soups & Salads – sopas e saladas
       Chicken/beef/fish/seafood – frango/carne/peixe/frutos do mar
       Sides – acompanhamentos
  Beverages – bebidas
  Desserts – sobremesas.



Condiments – temperos / condimentos
Vinegar – vinagre
Olive oil – azeite de oliva
Salt – sal
Sugar and sweeteners – açúcar e adoçante
Sauces – molhos
spicy/hot – apimentado/picante
Napkins – guardanapo
Silverware / cutlery – talheres

You may need cutlery if it has not been placed on the table or if you notice that one of the items is missing. You can ask the waiter:

  Could I get an extra fork, knife or spoon?

  fork – garfo
  knife – faca
  spoon – colheres

Dialogue with the waiter The host will introduce your waiter:

  Antony will be your waiter tonight.

As soon as your waiter arrives at the table, he will introduce himself and greet you:

  Welcome to Mark. My name is ____. How are you doing today?

Ele provavelmente vai te servir as bebidas:

  Can I get you something to drink?
  For starters, can I get you something to drink?

You will have time to decide your order while he fetches the drinks. When you return, you will place your order:

  Let me tell you about the specials today. We have ___. – Deixe me falar sobre os especiais do dia. Nós temos ___.

Ele pode te oferecer o menu de bebidas:

  Do you need a drink menu?

Ou você mesmo pode pedir:

  Could I have a drink menu?

Não diga, em hipótese nenhuma “I want”! É extremamente rude e grosseiro! Troque por: “I would like___” ou “Could I have___”

  I would like a drink menu, please.
  Could I have an extra fork?



  Água com gás – Sparkling water (nos Estados Unidos, diga: club soda, sparkling water, mineral water – já vem com gás. Na Inglaterra, prefira: fizzy water or sparkling water.)
  Água sem gás – Regular / flat / still water
  Água da torneira – Tap water

  Mal passado – Rare
  Ao ponto pra menos – Medium Rare
  Ao ponto – Medium
  Ao ponto pra mais – Medium Well
  Bem passado – Well done
